Essential programs for agro-industrial development will be implemented

MEMBER STATES OF THE ALBA SIGNED AN AGREEMENT FOR THE EXECUTION OF PROGRAMS FOR FOOD SOBEREIGNITY

Caracas, April 23, 2008.- (Press by MPPRE).-

 

 

During the Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alternative for the People of our America, ALBA summoned by the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías; on Wednesday 23rd of April an Agreement was signed for the implementation of cooperation programs in matters of food sovereignty and safety. 

 

The cooperation instrument was signed by the Presidents of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia; Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega and Evo Morales, respectively; as well as the Cuban Vice-president, Carlos Lage, on this day.

 

The agreement establishes:

 

1. The elaboration of development programs and projects in regards to food safety and sovereignty, with its technical and financial mechanisms.

 

2. Create the Executing Commission formed by the Ministers of Agriculture, Food or its equivalent, to organize the joint productive projects, to set installments or quantities for the exchange of food products.      

 

3. Develop essential programs of agro-industrial development for the following products: cereals: basically rice and corn; leguminous: basically beans; oleaginous; meat; milk; also water and irrigation systems; and other that are decided to be of common agreement by the parties.

 

4. Create a Network of Food Commercialization of the ALBA.

 

5. Create a Food Security Fund of the ALBA, with a capital of 100 million dollars.

 

The ceremony took place in the Salón Ayacucho of the Palacio de Miraflores.

 

Under the objectives of the agreement it could be emphasized the elaboration of programs and projects of development in regards to food safety and sovereignty, with its technical and financial mechanisms.

 

Likewise, the creation of Executing Commission formed by the Ministers of Agriculture, Food or its equivalent, to organize the joint productive projects, to set installments or quantities for the exchange of food products.      

 

One of the main points of this legal instrument is the possibility of developing essential programs of agro-industrial development for the following products: rice and corn, beans, oleaginous, meat and milk.  Also in irrigation systems and water; and other that are decided to be of common agreement by the parties.
