The Executive Authority
|
It is composed by the President of the Republic, H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo, reelected on the 28 of August 2006 and by a Cabinet selected by him. The Government system of Guyana comprises of the figure of Prime Minister who is equivalent to a Vice-president and is the leader of the official group in the Parliament. In Guyana, the Head of State and the Executive is a President elected to rule for a period of time.

The Legislative Power
|
This branch is constituted by a unicameral National Assembly, integrated by 65 members of which 53 are elected for a period of five years and four months, by a system of proportional representation and 12 non elected members that are Regional Representatives appointed by the regional democratic council, who are the administrative bodies in charge of carrying out the functions determined by the Central Government, these being the people responsible for providing assistance to the people.

The Judiciary
|
The legal system is based on the English consuetudinary right, written and of consensus, with a certain mixture of Roman-Dutch laws. It is represented by the Supreme Court of Judicature consisting of a Court of Appeal and a High Court, also by the Magistrates´ Courts (judges of first instance). The obligatory jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice has not been accepted.

Constitution framework
|
This was promulgated on the 6 of October 1980 and amended in 1996. Guyana’s Constitutional regime, among other matters, consecrates the following: The objective of the Nation is the national cohesion; the form of Government is a indivisible, secular, sovereign and democratic State in transition from capitalism to socialism; it defines the principles and foundations of the country’s political, economic and social systems, also it declares that the sovereignty belongs to the people, which is exerted by means of its representatives and the democratic organs created by the Constitution or in accordance to it. The power is exerted by the legislative, executive and judicial bodies of the country.

Minister Rodrigues was formerly the Minister of Amerindian Affairs. She graduated in Business Administration (University of Canada) and has a Master in Social Work (University of Guyana).
