THE VENEZUELAN INSTITUTE FOR CULTURE AND COOPERATION (IVCC)
39 YEARS OPERATING AS THE VENEZUELAN INSTITUTE FOR CULTURE AND COOPERATION IN GEORGETOWN, GUYANA
In September 1968, the opening of the “Romulo Gallegos Cultural Center” took place in Georgetown, by the initiative of the Venezuelan Ministry of Education with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of the then denominated Republic of Venezuela. In 1985, the Romulo Gallegos Cultural Center was definitely handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, an occasion in which it adopted the new name of Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation (IVCC – abbreviated in Spanish).
During its 39 years of operation, distinguished Guyanese personalities have participated in the different activities organized by the IVCC in Georgetown, among which there was the current President of the Republic of Guyana, H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo, who studied Spanish in 1990; Donald Ramotar, General Secretary of the PPP/C political party; Manniram Prashad, Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry among others.
At the beginning of its foundation, the IVCC has always been a point of special interest in the cultural life of Georgetown, in particular the teaching of the Spanish language. In this Institute various courses have been taught, such as handicraft, ceramic, dancing, painting, etc., by Venezuelan teachers within the Cooperation Program for the Caribbean (PROCA - abbreviated in Spanish). Also, the Institute serves as a center for the exhibition of arts, in which various plastic artists from both Venezuela and Guyana presents their works; as well as a scene for functions and dances.

The new IVCC building from the 22 of March 2008
The old and deteriorated building of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation (IVCC – abbreviated in Spanish) in Guyana is now a memory of the past.
Today the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation is functioning in an entirely new and different environment. A perfect setting with air-conditioned rooms for gatherings, classrooms and offices, for the development of our work in the most favorable conditions; this was communicated by Ambassador Dario Morandy.
Ambassador Morandy indicated that this is a reflection of the efforts that has been made to strengthen the permanent relations and cooperation between Guyana and Venezuela.
The new building with its implications is rapidly becoming a reference for the people of Guyana, where more than 300 students are learning Spanish as a second language.
And finally, Ambassador Morandy informed that new programs will be designed which includes courses of advanced training in a variety of areas, cinema club, exhibitions of craftsmen, painters and sculptors and the social organization to set in motion various Social Missions as an introduction for the installation of the "House of ALBA (Bolivarian Alternative for America – abbreviated in Spanish)".
